Hi all. I have managed to patch the WP-Translate and tested it on WordPress 2.2.
Current Version: 2.2
Overview
WP-Translate is a simple drop in way for users to view your blog in their language. Its easy for any most users to add this functionality to their site.
WP-Translate utilizes the following Online translation services:
- Alta Vista’s Babel Fish (for translation from English to : French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Simplified/Traditional Chinese)
- IBM’s Websphere Translation (for translation from English to: Brazilian Portuguese)
- Interpret (for translation from English to: Bahasa Indonesia, Swedish, Norwegian, Afrikaans)
WP-Translate 2.2 Release Notes
Added the following language for translation:
- Swedish
- Norwegian
- Bahasa Indonesia
- Afrikaans
- Chinese Traditional
- Brazilian Portuguese
Requirements
WP-Translate works with WordPress 1.5 up to WordPress 2.2 (Tested on WordPress 2.2)
Your web server should able to execute PHP.
Installation instructions
- Upload the wp-translate directory to your plugins folder, usually wp-content/plugins/
- Activate the plugin on the plugin screen.
- Add <?php wptranslate(n); ?> to your template where you want the list. n can be either 1 or 2. 1 is for a vertical display. 2 makes it horizontal.
Special Installation instructions for non-Wordpress users
As I mentioned before, as long as your Web server supports PHP you should be able to use this plugin. Please follow this steps:
- Extract the zip file
- Edit wp-translate.php which is located in wp-translate directory
- At line 103, replace $img_loc = get_settings(’siteurl’) . ‘/wp-content/plugins/wp-translate’; with $img_loc = ‘/wp-translate’;
- Save the file
- Upload the wp-translate directory to your root folder.
- In the page you want the flags to be displayed, put <?php include_once(realpath($_SERVER[‘DOCUMENT_ROOT’]).’/wp-translate/wp-translate.php’); ?> in the first line of the file.
- Add <?php wptranslate(n); ?> anywhere you want the flags to be displayed. n can be either 1 or 2. 1 is for a vertical display. 2 makes it horizontal.

Thanks,
@Dorota: You might want to use http://sodeve.net/sodeves-wp-translate-blogger-edition/ for your blogspot blog. Its specially made and tested in Blogspot.com
@Koesna: You’re welcome.
How would I add a text link after each flag? (So that there is the name of the language as well as the flag.) Before I upgraded to 2.2, I had tinkered with wp-translate to get a combination flag/text link, but the method doesn’t work with this patch because there isn’t an explicit anchor( ) element.
mmm interesting…
Can I make a suggestion though?
Only for WordPress as a start…
I’d rather try to handle the output from the translation services by screenscraping, and replace my content asynchronously…
I say WordPress only because it would be easy to manage if you know how wordpress outputs your content, so grepping and returning the translated CONTENT area would be quite simple…
As a proper WP plugin, I’d create a content viewing page, which I’d send to the translation service, so that no unnecessary stuff like sidebars and header etc are processed. The view would simply output the content and / or comments of the current page, be processed, and returned to the browser translated and ready to replace.
I dunno, I think I’ll give it a try… would you mind if I tweaked your plugin?
me likes a challenge 🙂
Hello Hardono, I stumbled upon your site (as in the old fashioned stumble, not StumbleUpon.com though I’m sure you’re in there too).
I was excited to find your WP Translate plugin. Didn’t find Singlish though. That’s too bad. Then again, maybe that’s a good thing, considering I didn’t talk very highly about my school years in Singapore http://www.joyofcamping.com/about/
Anyway, so happy lah, I found your site. Keep it up.
Plugin doesn’t work well in IE7 the sidebar moves to bottom of the page after translation.
Works fine with firefox.
Hello Hadono. So Cool Program. Do you have any for Blogger ^__^
Interesting. I think it will be useful for Komang’s Blog.
@Dominique: By all means please go ahead 🙂
@meomee: There is a link to the blogger edition just below this article
That’s a great plugin you have there, much better than Angsumu’s paid Translation. However, I have a suggestion which I believe may help you improve your plugin.
Can I suggest that you include a cache mechanism in your plugin – in a way useful for creating static pages, instead of referring to URL belonging to BabelFish site.
That way, it helps to improve page view.
