I saw this really cool video by Google in Youtube about the new Android Phone. Since it was posted on 4th April, I doubt that this is another April Fools from Google. In case you didn’t notice, this year Google treats us with 8-bit Google Maps for NES, Google Fiber Bar – A fiberlicious source for your daily fiber consumption, and GMail Tap – a new GMail which the keyboard is shrinked to just 3 buttons, dot, dash and space. And yes, you need to type using Morse Code .

Alright, back to the new Android Phone. By comparing these two videos below, I somehow have a conviction that Google has secretly invented a Time Machine. Used it to travel to year 3000 AD, and stole MomCorp‘s trade secret

Anyway, I hope you like the arrangement. It started sad, mellow and slow with An Jing, then progressed to slow rock with Bu Neng Shuo De Mi Mi. And finally, Huo Yuan Jia with it’s rapping rock, turntables effect, Erhu and distorted guitar. This last song simply blows my mind.

Although Jay Chou has many albums and songs, somehow only these three songs from Jay Chou that managed to stick to my brain. The rest simply failed to do so.

And why would you think like that, you might ask. Well, I think we (Indonesians) have many serious problems that need to be addressed.

1. The Supporters

We are rowdy, childish, deluded and lack of sportsmanship. We prefer to jeer the opponents rather than to cheer our own team. We were drowning in euphoria when we won the previous matches. We thought our footballers were so good; they deserve a place in elite leagues in Europe. We were so high, that it felt really hurt to taste a defeat.

And oh boy, how do we react to a defeat. We just can’t take it when we lost, do we? We would do unsportsmanlike behaviors to cover our shame, pain and to vent our anger. We would do things like singing our national anthem out loud, although we didn’t win the game. So loud, it is effectively drowning out the opponent’s national anthem that is being played. We really can’t show respect to the winning team, can we?

To make the matter worse, we have a bunchthrong of cheapskates that didn’t buy the ticket, yet forcing themselves into the stadium by breaking the gate. I just couldn’t comprehend why did they do that. If you didn’t buy the ticket, go find a nice place to watch the game. Find cafe that’s showing the match in big screen. I believe many Wartegs, Warungs (street food vendor) have TV and is definitely showing the game. Instead, they choose to damage a public property, tussle with each other, and possibly endanger themselves and other spectators in the stadium.

Update: Two supporters died in stampede. Sigh, when will we learn?. Do we need to go through Indonesia’s own Hillsborough Disaster?

2. The Players

I think we are not good enough to win the game. We should feel lucky because Malaysia squandered so many good chances to score.
Seriously, long balls? Our players may have the speed, but they didn’t have the height. It is more difficult to control a lob pass than low pass. We already made the mistake in AFF final. Why repeat the same mistake here?

We must graciously admit Malaysia did play better, their through-passes were dangerous, and their counter-attacks threatened Indonesian goals so many times. Why can’t we play more like them? It is proven successful, and I must admit it is more beautiful to watch.

And please stop blaming the referee. Look hard again on how we played. How was our passes compared to Malaysian’s? How was our off-the-ball movements? How the players positioned themselves? Let’s focus to our own weaknesses instead of focusing to others’ weaknesses.

3. The Government

The only way to improve our country’s football quality is by fixing the quality of our domestic league. Yet, we are taking shortcuts. Instead of revamping the leagues, build and promote football academies, we took many players with Indonesian ancestry from European leagues into our team and hoping that it would auto-magically work. Sadly, these players were not even the first-team back in Europe.
Stop taking shortcuts! Improve the stadium quality. Improve the field quality. Improve the supporters’ culture. Improve the safety measure!

Look at what Britain did to regulate their football. They used to have hooligans and mass fights after the game. Look where they are now. Look how much the football teams contribute to Britain’s economy. No, no, no. We don’t need to send useless members of DPR there, we already have internet. Almost everything is available in internet. We can always research what we need there.

Update: Apparently PSSI has found back their sanity. Now they realized that naturalizing foreign-born Indonesians doesn’t work. What do you expect for such an instant approach?

Conclusion

Now that we lost the match, it’s time to look back in the mirror and reflect why did we lose? Did we play badly? Did the opponent play better? Don’t let emotion clouds your judgement. Be honest with yourself.

I know we are sad, and some of us is angry. But we should stop being angry because angry is a sign of weakness. We have a lot of things to improve, our football quality, our sportsmanship and our graciousness to defeat.

I’ve mentioned before about Stages of Grief before. So let’s move on from our stages of grief, and start plotting on how Indonesia can play the Beautiful Game, beautifully.

First time I heard about PowerBalance was when my wife showing me an advert, and said that our nephew is wearing it. She went on and tell me how our nephew loves to play basketball and claiming that he had some sort of improvements after wearing PowerBalance.

I was skeptical as I can’t explain how the hell a wristband can improve on how you jump, how you calibrating your power and correctly aiming as you leap and make that three-point-shot. I immediately dismissed it and closed the discussion by changing it to other topic .

When I read the Gizmodo article today, I realized something. It’s the placebo effect. The placebo effect is a phenomenon whereby a patient was able to recover/improv eventhough he/she was given a sham prescription. The wikipedia article explains further that placebo only works to some people.

As of PowerBalance goes, I think it’s just a placebo for your self-confidence. It’s similar to your lucky boot that helped you to score goals in soccer match. As Stephanie L. Stoltz puts it, there is a connection between confidence and performance:

… In my results, I found that there is a significant decrease in the performance of individuals with lowered self-confidence. I also found that there is a significant increase in the performance of individuals with higher self-confidence …

The problem with a placebo is that it will stop working once the patient realized that it is a placebo, not a real medicine.

Now that they have openly declare that it is a ‘placebo’, will you still wear it?

Kawan, kita sebaya. Hanya bulan yang membedakan usia. Kita tumbuh di tengah sebuah generasi dimana tawa bersama itu sangat langka. Kaki kita menapaki jalan panjang dengan langkah payah menyeret sejuta beban yang seringkali bukan urusan kita. Kita disibukkan dengan beragam masalah yang sialnya juga bukan urusan kita. Kita adalah anak-anak muda yang dipaksa tua oleh televisi yang tiada henti mengabarkan kebencian. Sementara adik-adik kita tidak tumbuh sebagaimana mestinya, narkoba politik uang membunuh nurani mereka. Orang tua, pendahulu kita dan mereka yang memegang tampuk kekuasaan adalah generasi gagal. Suatu generasi yang hidup dalam bayang-bayang rencana yang mereka khianati sendiri. Kawan, akankah kita berhenti lantas mengorbankan diri kita untuk menjadi seperti mereka?

Di negeri permai ini, cinta hanyalah kata-kata sementara benci menjadi kenyataan. Kita tidak pernah mencintai apapun yang kita lakukan, kita hanya ingin mendapatkan hasilnya dengan cepat. Kita tidak mensyukuri berkah yang kita dapatkan, kita hanya ingin menghabiskannya. Kita enggan berbagi kebahagiaan, sebab kemalangan orang lain adalah sumber utama kebahagiaan kita. Kawan, inilah kenyataan memilukan yang kita hadapi, karena kita hidup tanpa cinta maka bahagia bersama menjadi langka. Bayangkan adik-adik kita, lupakan mereka yang tua, bagaimana mereka bisa tumbuh dalam keadaan demikian. Kawan, cinta adalah persoalan kegemaran. Cinta juga masalah prinsip. Bila kau mencintai sesuatu maka kau tidak akan peduli dengan yang lainnya. Tidak kepada poster dan umbul-umbul, tidak kepada para kriminal yang suka mencuci muka apalagi kepada kuli kamera yang menimbulkan kolera. Cinta adalah kesungguhan yang tidak dibatasi oleh menang dan kalah.

Hari-hari belakangan ini keadaan tampak semakin tidak menentu. Keramaian puluhan ribu orang antre tidak mendapatkan tiket. Jutaan orang lantang bersuara demi sepakbola. Segelintir elit menyiapkan rencana jahat untuk menghancurkan kegembiraan rakyat. Kakimu, kawan, telah memberi makna solidaritas. Gocekanmu kawan, telah mengundang tarian massal tanpa saweran. Terobosanmu, kawan, menghidupkan harapan kepada adik-adik kita bahwa masa depan itu masih ada. Tendanganmu kawan, membuat orang-orang percaya bahwa kata “bisa” belum punah dari kehidupan kita. Tetapi inilah buruknya hidup di tengah bangsa yang frustasi, semua beban diletakkan ke pundakmu. Seragammu hendak digunakan untuk mencuci dosa politik. Kegembiraanmu hendak dipunahkan oleh iming-iming bonus dan hadiah. Di Bukit Jalil kemarin, ada yang mengatakan kau terkapar, tetapi aku percaya kau tengah belajar. Di Senayan esok, mereka bilang kau akan membalas, tetapi aku berharap kau cukup bermain dengan gembira.

Firman Utina, kapten tim nasional sepak bola Indonesia, bermain bola lah dan tidak usah memikirkan apa-apa lagi. Sepak bola tidak ada urusannya dengan garuda di dadamu, sebab simbol hanya akan menggerus kegembiraan. Sepak bola tidak urusannya dengan harga diri bangsa, sebab harga diri tumbuh dari sikap dan bukan harapan. Di lapangan kau tidak mewakili siapa-siapa, kau memperjuangkan kegembiraanmu sendiri. Di pinggir lapangan, kau tidak perlu menoleh siapa-siapa, kecuali Tuan Riedl yang percaya sepak bola bukan dagangan para pecundang. Berlarilah Firman, Okto, Ridwan dan Arif, seolah-olah kalian adalah kanak-kanak yang tidak mengerti urusan orang dewasa. Berjibakulah Maman, Hamzah, Zulkifli dan Nasuha seolah-olah kalian mempertahankan kegembiraan yang hendak direnggut lawan. Tenanglah Markus, gawang bukan semata-mata persoalan kebobolan tetapi masalah kegembiraan membuyarkan impian lawan. Gonzales dan Irvan, bersikaplah layaknya orang asing yang memberikan contoh kepada bangsa yang miskin teladan.

Kawan, aku berbicara tidak mewakili siapa-siapa. Ini hanyalah surat dari seorang pengolah kata kepada seorang penggocek bola. Sejujurnya, kami tidak mengharapkan Piala darimu. Kami hanya menginginkan kegembiraan bersama dimana tawa seorang tukang becak sama bahagianya dengan tawa seorang pemimpin Negara. Tidak, kami tidak butuh piala, bermainlah dengan gembira sebagaimana biasanya. Biarkan bola mengalir, menarilah kawan, urusan gol seringkali masalah keberuntungan. Esok di Senayan, kabarkan kepada seluruh bangsa bahwa kebahagiaan bukan urusan menang dan kalah. Tetapi kebahagiaan bersumber pada cinta dan solidaritas. Berjuanglah layaknya seorang laki-laki, kawan. Adik-adik kita akan menjadikan kalian teladan!
